Welcome · 01

Hello, I'm Anne. Les Rabouillères is our family house, the one where our children learned to catch shrimp, where we come back every August for blackberry jam, and where, through the kitchen window, you can still hear the bells of Sainte-Honorine.

We opened its doors for you because we'd love you to experience Normandy the way we do: early mornings at the bakery, fish & chips facing Arromanches at low tide, and in the evening, in the garden, a cider poured straight from the farm next door.

Chapter 03 · Experiences

Seven mornings you won't forget.

There's the list of things to see, and then there's the Normandy we keep for ourselves. Here's what we whisper in your ear before you pack your bags.

Port-en-Bessin harbour
N° 01 · At dawn

Cycling to Port-en-Bessin

Fifteen minutes by bike on the EuroVelo 4, between fields and sea. The harbour comes to life, the trawlers return to the quay. You pick your fish straight off the catch, then ride home with landscapes that change every single day.

Bakery
N° 02 · At the counter

The Port-en-Bessin bakery

Traditional baguette, croissants with Isigny butter, fallue brioche, teurgoule rice pudding and the brasillé — that oval puff-pastry flatbread, a Calvados speciality, eaten warm and dusted with sugar. A country recipe dating back to 1837.

Arromanches
N° 03 · Low tide

Walking on the artificial harbour

At Arromanches, when the sea pulls back, you walk at the foot of the Phoenix caissons. Fish & chips on the way home.

Shellfishing at low tide
N° 04 · With the family

Shellfish gathering at low tide

A net, and the children shrieking with joy each time a shrimp jumps. Best done two hours before low tide. The gear is available at the Comptoir de la Mer, in Port-en-Bessin.

Bayeux market
N° 05 · On Saturdays

The Bayeux market

Go at opening time for the day's catch, the camembert, the heirloom tomatoes from the market gardener. Leave with a basket that smells of summer.

Blackberries and apples
N° 06 · In August

Wild blackberries, evening jam

The hedgerows in August are often full of blackberries. You set off with two big bowls, come back with purple fingers, and the next day it becomes jam, crumble, or a tart with Isigny crème fraîche.

The Sapinière farm
N° 07 · At the orchard

The Sapinière farm, cider & calvados

The cider farm in Saint-Laurent can host a tasting of cider, pommeau, vinegar and calvados. La Sapinière, at Ruquet beach, is not far.

Landmark · In the heart of the D-Day landings

Right in the middle of History.

On 6 June 1944, five beaches, from Utah to Sword. The house sits right there, in Aure-sur-Mer, between Port-en-Bessin and Colleville-sur-Mer, at the hinge between the American and British sectors. The perfect base to reach every site in no more than 45 minutes' drive.

Chapter 04 · Itineraries

Two days, one week, fifteen days.

Three travel notebooks we drew up from the house, so you miss nothing of the D-Day landings or the coast. From the two-day highlights to the fifteen-day deep dive, by bike or by car.

Day 1 · before breakfast

The Sainte-Honorine beach

On foot at the bottom of the village: the eastern end of Fox Red. At low tide, the waterfall tumbling off the cliff, the fossils in the rocks, the house from "The Longest Day" and the WN60 bunkers above.

Omaha Beach & the American cemetery

West to the Les Braves memorial at Saint-Laurent, then the Colleville American cemetery, 70 hectares above Omaha, more than 9,000 graves.

Pointe du Hoc & La Cambe

The 30 m cliff scaled by the Rangers, a landscape of craters and bunkers. Then the German cemetery at La Cambe, "reconciliation over the graves", more than 21,000 soldiers.

Day 2 · morning

Longues-sur-Mer battery

Three of the four casemates still hold their original 150 mm naval guns. A coastal walk from Longues toward Arromanches for the finest views.

Day 2 · late morning

Arromanches & the Mulberry B harbour

The D-Day Museum and its models, and the Arromanches 360 circular cinema on the heights with its archive footage.

Day 2 · afternoon

Asnelles, the Phoenix caissons

At low tide, you walk a few metres from the concrete blocks towed across from England and sunk to form the breakwater. An easy ride back to the house.

Chapter 06 · Questions

What people often ask us.

The questions that keep coming up in our messages. If yours isn't here, write to us: we always reply the same day.

In Aure-sur-Mer, in the Calvados. Aure-sur-Mer beach is 1 km away, Omaha Beach 4 km, Bayeux 13 km, Arromanches 16 km, the Pointe du Hoc 16 km. Ideally located between Port-en-Bessin and Colleville-sur-Mer, the house enjoys a central position that lets you do everything within 45 minutes: all the D-Day landing beaches, Caen, and the Baie des Veys.
In my view, it's the best possible base: the house sits right in the middle of all the sites to visit. Omaha 5 minutes away, Pointe du Hoc 15, Arromanches 20, Utah 45. All of it on beautiful country roads.
Very. Enclosed courtyard, cot on request, high chair, beach toys. And shellfishing at low tide is truly the activity that makes them happy.
Yes. Chasse Spleen, the independent lodging across the way, is on the ground floor with its own bathroom. No access through the courtyard, just 3 steps to come in from the terrace. Easy access and full comfort. Please note: in the main house, the bedrooms are upstairs, reached by the staircase.
Fibre-optic internet installed, symmetrical speed. A workspace in the main house, guaranteed quiet, and the sea ten minutes away for your lunch break. We've hosted several workations without a hitch.
There's always something to do under cover. To unwind: a pool or a spa in Bayeux. For food lovers: a visit to the Saint-Laurent cider farm, with a tasting of cider, pommeau, vinegar and calvados, perfect for a rainy day. For sightseeing: head to Caen for shopping, the Abbaye aux Hommes and the Abbaye aux Dames, William the Conqueror's castle, or the Château de Fontaine-Henry. And two sure bets: the Caen Memorial and La Cité de la Mer in Cherbourg. Not forgetting a quiet stop at the Bayeux library.
Yes, and it's an experience we recommend to everyone. Two hours before low tide, ideally with a tidal coefficient above 80. We don't lend the gear, but everything is available at the Comptoir de la Mer in Port-en-Bessin-Huppain — which is also a homeware shop we love. For the permitted zones and regulations, see Calvados recreational shellfishing.
We're easily reached by bike from Bayeux (15 km). Getting around is easy thanks to the nearby EuroVelo 4 (La Vélomaritime) and the cycle path linking Bayeux to Port-en-Bessin. Bus Line 120 connects Bayeux to the village square. By train, Bayeux is 2h25 from Paris on the TER. And if you don't have your own bikes, you can rent some in Colleville-sur-Mer.
Yes. There's a charging point at the village beach, 200 m from the house. And for a fast charge, the Super U in Port-en-Bessin (4.5 km) has a 150 kW charger.
The weather is mildest from May to October. We have a soft spot for May, June and September: the calm, the beautiful light and gentle days (up to 19-20°). July and August stay the sunniest for swimming. October keeps lovely bright spells. Winter is greyer and wetter, but we love it all the same: Christmas by the fire with family, and above all the scallops, of which Port-en-Bessin is the capital. In every season, even the most surprising ones like January, we make the most of it and find it well worth our while.
